CHIPs informal number assessments are quick and easy ways to check key aspects of children’s developing number understanding in early years settings. They are based on current research about the most important indicators which predict later success and which will provide an essential basis for beginning school. They are illustrated by videos of children in one nursery setting, showing a range of responses. The assessments can be integrated into daily routines, play, stories and games indoors and out.  They can be adapted, using language and gestures more familiar to the children, or presented playfully, for instance by toy characters making mistakes. They also provide practitioners with a guide of what to look for when observing children’s play.
